I didn’t become someone who swaps out their decor every season, a self-proclaimed “seasonal decorator” if you will, overnight. I have many fond memories as a kid of birthday parties, Christmas, Halloween, the 4th of July, and the activities, foods, and decorations that I associate with each. Having kids definitely gave me the motivation to decorate for them to give visible updates and a feeling of change each season. Over the years, I started by inheriting a lot of seasonal decor, which was a free and easy way to get started. Then, I started purchasing items slowly that I loved, that brought me joy (if you haven’t read that Marie Kondo’s book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up) it really helps you shape your attachment to items). I then started weeding out pieces that I felt guilty to give away, but didn’t want to hold onto them just to hold onto them. I now have a combination of hand-me-downs and newer items that I use to decorate each season. Even with reducing the items I have – it still takes up quite a bit of room, here are some tips for how to organize and store your seasonal decorations

Seasonal Storage Tips

Use the Right Storage

In order to have that clean palette, all of the previous season’s items need to go somewhere. For me that is clear Hefty Storage Bins. Although I have other larger, solid colored bins, the size of the Hefty Storage Bins means that they are large enough to fit many items, but small enough that they can I can easily carry them up from the basement. Since they’re clear, I can see the contents of what is in them, in addition to the label, so that I can find what I need quickly.

Label Your Storage

Having the right storage is great, but properly labeling your bins makes all the difference. You can use simple white labels and then write on them with a sharpie. When my kids were young I would take photos of the contents of their toy bins and then print those photos to put on the front. Having those visible labels, especially for young children, made it easy for them to find what they wanted and also know which bins to use when cleaning them up.

Sort by Seasons & Holidays

I have bins for each major holiday that we celebrate including Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter and so on. For larger holidays like Christmas, I still have a smaller Hefty Storage Bin for items that I know that I will want quick access to as soon as the season changes including table runners and table cloths. But I also have large bins for the rest of the decorations, including Christmas lights, garland, stockings, etc.

Store Your Seasonal Linens

For many years I would store all of my seasonal linens together – hand towels, tablecloths, tablerunners, and placemats. I realized that most items I only needed access to a few months out of the year. By storing those items away after each season, it will make it much easier for you to find what you need when you need it.
